We are an English law boutique practice specialising in telecoms, digital and data.
We open today, 1 July 2020, and after 26 years working in traditional law firms, telecom companies and a regulator, I am now working for myself. I am in equal parts excited and terrified. But maybe that is to be expected when you start a new business in the middle of a global pandemic, facing the severest economic slowdown in my lifetime and with the unsolved problems of the climate crisis and social injustice looming over the medium term. And yet, I am enthusiastic and optimistic for the future.
Whilst it has been my privilege to work for some of the world’s most respected law firms, it feels like the time of ‘big-law’ is coming to an end. The lock-down has demonstrated that you don’t need expensive offices in prime locations or even necessarily to meet face to face to do business. As AI and cloud services simplify, automate or simply take care of many processes, the requirement for a large supporting infrastructure and a trainee-associate-partner staffing pyramid disappears in many practice areas.
What is left are relationships with people and the expertise and experience needed to provide wise counsel.
